Toltec Gorge

A quiet and powerful experience. This expedition is designed to be peaceful and reflective. In a majestic and scarcely populated destination, prepare for a remote and healing camping weekend. The Toltec Gorge is a world-class fly-fishing destination on the Rio De Los Pinos. If the chill and flowy dirt trails aren’t enough of a rush, opt for a grueling day’s work traversing the completely untraveled remote gorge that is sliced between an active historic railway and the edge of the Cruces Basin Wilderness of Northern New Mexico. Toltec Gorge has 800-foot-high cliff walls, and the river bottom with countless waterfalls. This expedition is only possible during appropriate weather and seasonal conditions, making it safe enough to travel through its water's narrow passages and waterfall jumps. The Hike is around 9 miles round trip, from our amazing camping location on the river. The Hike has us bushwhacking up and over a large ravine, across the Colorado/New Mexico state line, and into the depths of the gorge. We hike 2 miles through the shallow waters and jump down waterfalls into swimming holes. When the gorge finally begins to break open again, we hike 800 vertical feet to the railroad that we will then follow along the top of the gorge through tunnels to end up back at camp. This can be a serene experience of gratitude and reflection.
